{ Nelsonville, Ohio } Logging Camp.

wayne_006sm, originally uploaded by noahrabinowitz.

Wayne National Forest was a product of the great depression. The
federal government bought a huge tract of land in Southeast Ohio that was basically worthless. It was group of barren hill sides with former logging camps and coal mines.

This is the first installment of a documentary on WNF and the effects
of resource extraction.

Pictured is a logging camp in an area of the forest that is being cleared for a roadway bypass that will supposedly provide economic stimulation to this poor rural area. Part of the proposed area for the new highway will destroy an area that is a nesting ground for an endangered species of bat. Like anything, there are a hundred different sides to the story.

I'll throw some more on as soon as I process and scan.

Thanks for looking. I hope everyone is having a good spring.
